The project advances SLMs based on the liquid crystals on silicon technology and the understanding of limiting issues in view of damage thresholds, stability, polarization effects and diffractive properties.
Objectives: 1. Achieve improvement of the damage threshold and reflectivity. 2. Implement SLM with TEC and test for high powers/energies laser sources. 3. Model the light propagation through SLM. 4. Achieve reduction of the phase ripple for applications with pulsed sources.
Expected Results: 1. Damage threshold > 20 W/cm2 and > 1 mJ/cm2 2. Experiments possible with temperature-stabilized device. 3. Polarization-dependent scattering effects better understood. 4. Diffraction efficiency over time stabilized.
Specific Research and Training of ESR: 1. diffraction modelling methods, including but not limited to RCWA, in application to SLMs and microdisplay devices. 2. LC modelling, including but not limited to FEM analysis. 3. digital holography and hologram calculation
methods (particularly iterative Fourier transformation algorithm and other methods). 4. software skills, e.g. Matlab/Octave, Virtual Lab, MicroSIM, LCD-Modelling software, Labview, C++.
Planned secondment(s): 1. UMUEN,2. Toptica, 3. UGLAS.
