ColOpt at the 724. WE-Heraeus Seminar: Hot topic talk and poster prize

This week ColOpt has been active at the 724. WE-Heraeus Seminar. We had a fantastic few days at the seminar with several colleagues from ColOpt amongst the invited speakers, chairing sessions, and leading a great panel discussion. It was a really interactive online seminar for our research community.

Our ESRs were also active at the seminar. Congratulations to Valeria Bobkova whose abstract, “Light-driven nonlinear dynamics of a colloidal suspension in a single feedback system” was selected for a hot topic talk.  Well done to Xiangliang Li who won a €100 poster prize for his contribution  “Emergent structures and dynamics in a quantum gas coupled optical cavity.”

Thank you to the WE- Heraeus Foundation, the speakers, and to all the participants for making this a great event.

ColOpt at CLEO/Europe-EQEC: 21st-25th June 2021

Thorsten Ackemann (Strathclyde) is presenting post deadline talk at CLEO/Europe-EQEC  on spin memory in InAs quantum dots from collaboration with early stage researcher James Doogan from M Squared Lasers (PD-1.1 Thursday 18.30 CEST).  The Early Stage Researchers presenting are Giuseppe Baio from Strathclyde (EA-4.2, Wednesday, 15.00 and EF-8.6, Friday 9.45) and Valeriia Bobkova from Muenster (EF3.6, Wednesday, 12.15). Details at CLEO EUROPE 2021

ColOpt at UniKorn Poster Session 16th June 2021

Our ColOpt Early Stage Researcher Giuseppe Baio presented a poster at the UniKorn Seminar  hosted by the British Optomechanical Research Network earlier this week on 16th June 2021. Giuseppe’s poster made the prize shortlist.

Rotating and spiralling spatial dissipative solitons of light and cold atoms
Giuseppe Baio, University of Strathclyde
Clouds of cold neutral atoms driven by a coherent beam of light exhibit self-structured states,
transversally with respect to the beam axis. For parameter regimes where atomic density
modulations induced by optomechanical forces are prominent, dynamical localized structures of light and atoms are observed, where optomechanical transport can be engineered by means of phase structured input fields. By appropriately tailoring the phase structure, one can induce
rotating or spiralling motion of such optomechanical cavity solitons and interacting soliton chains. We also discuss the feature of soliton-soliton interactions with the cold-atom optomechanical nonlinearity and the stability of multiple bound states.

724. WE-Heraeus-Seminar 2021 – Application Deadline Extended to 7th May 2021

Collective Effects and Non‐Equilibrium Quantum Dynamics 27th June – 30th June 2021.

Applications Extended!

Closing Date: 7th May 2021

Applications: Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation website: 724. WE-Heraeus-Seminar

Collective, non-linear dynamics and spontaneous self-organization are abundant in nature, sciences and technology. These processes are found in biology and chemistry, in non-linear optics and condensed matter physics, and across both the classical and the quantum regime. The understanding of such dynamics is important for fundamental sciences, where the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics is a major quest from a fundamental point of view, and for quantum technologies, with the demand for complex systems with robust quantum coherent dynamics.

A promising and versatile platform to study these processes in a highly controlled way is the collective interaction of light with laser-cooled cold or quantum-degenerate matter. This experimental setting explores the innovative control of matter through optomechanical effects, identifying novel quantum phases, investigating light transport in strongly scattering and disordered systems. Additionally, it is advancing our knowledge of long-range coupled systems in the presence of noise and driving fields.

This seminar focuses on collective effects and non-equilibrium quantum dynamics in systems with matter-light interaction. In addition to self-organization of matter in classical and quantized light fields, collective scattering involving coupled dipoles and finite-range interactions, via complex multi-mode light fields or via Rydberg atoms will be central topics in the workshop.

The seminar will most likely be an online event via meetanyway and the video conference tool Zoom.
